03 — Is AI…?

Many people have their thoughts on AI’s place in the world. Many think its the way forward, that its the future. Many are also worried for its advent, understandably so, as it has replaced an overwhelming number of jobs, particularly that of entry-level positions. Is AI going to be the thing that drives everything forward in the future?

I don't have the answers. However, I personally think that AI is overhyped to be the “next big thing”. Sure, I cannot deny its effectiveness, and the fact that it has been utilized excessively in the working world. As creatives, we tend to hear both sides of the AI spectrum: "AI is going to take our jobs" or "AI should be used only as a tool". Such blanket statements are common even outside of our industry. But to be fair, especially for the tech industry, I think its weird to think that AI won’t perform in the very environment that it was born in, for the purpose it was created for.

I think that AI is useful for the mundane. It has its place in taking over repetitive tasks that would otherwise require mountains of hands to work. However, the need for such a replacement is meant to fuel efficiency, not meant to be a solution to overworking and undervaluing of labour.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think we should at least learn AI on some level, even if you don't personally need to use it. I think it has ingrained its importance into society so well that its a required skillset at this point, and AI does provide insane value within a short period of time.

What I am worried about is when everyone is so caught up with the hype, what will happen to the value of the things that people think up with their own minds and create with their own hands? Would it decrease in value in comparison to that of the artificial, or would it go up in value due to the scarcity of trade? What would happen to those who stop practicising critical thinking? Are we so distrustful of ourselves? Imagine doing work so masterful, incorporating years of experience and late nights, that the first question people think about is: is this done by AI? I'd be furious, honestly.

It has to be emphasized: I'm not against AI, but I think that there should be more awareness in how we use it and the repercussions that occur following its adoption. It could be the pessimist in me talking but with the way things are going, its hard to imagine a future where AI is not essential to the human. It feels like the whole smartphone thing all over again: people everywhere just glued to their smartphones regardless of the reason, a shift in history in its own right. All I hear for now is just mindless chanting.

If you ask me, I prefer to believe in the human.
