remembering the legacy of the former Kallang Stadium

In 2017 when the old Kallang Stadium was set to be demolished, a competition was called to create benches that upheld its legacy using the old wood that came from there.

TRACK is a group of benches that when placed together, creates the visage of a running track, a homage to a significant piece of the stadium.

It is among the 20 winners of the Re:Bench 2017 competition held by the Urban Redevlopment Authority (URA) Singapore.

TRACK has been fabricated and can now be found installed at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore City Gallery at the URA Centre, and Singapore Sports Hub.

I wanted to capture the stadium’s essence in the simplest way possible. Using the running track as inspiration, I tried to go for a humble yet elegant design that would reflect the physical essence of the place where memories before my time was forged long ago.

TRACK is a humble bench that incoporates the essense of the running track through the lines on its surface.

A single bench forms part of a track and extra benches can be added, forming a complete track and encouraging inclusiveness within the space.
